Oily waste recovery
Systems for oily waste treatment are an important part
of the G-force delivery program. G-force is an
assigned Alfa Laval OEM (Original Equipment
Manufacture) for design, manufacture, installation and
operations of separation systems utilizing only Alfa
Laval key components. G-force is able therefore to
tap into Alfa Laval’s vast range of experience in
process and separation technologies developed over
decades in optimising process performance. That’s
why G-force can offer the optimal solution for
treatment of such heterogeneous mixtures of oily
waste. Proper treatment allows our clients to convert
all types of oily waste from the related industries of
drilling, production and refining into valuable,
marketable products.
Solving an environmental problem
By treating the oil waste in G-force’s separation
systems an often-serious pollution or storage problem
can be solved. At the same time expensive tank
capacity or land area can be released for more
profitable use.
A difficult separation task
Originating from many sources, oily waste varies widely in composition and physical properties. One
common factor is that they contain both water and solid impurities, coarse as well as fine. Often they
form a very tight emulsion. Treatment of oily waste is therefore a difficult task and most of the methods
used for their recovery fail in one way or the other. Gravity settling (1 G force) is a slow and often
ineffective operation that requires large lots of land space and excessive amounts of expensive treating
chemicals. Filter presses can only separate solids from liquids and have a very low capacity.
Incineration is an expensive process, whereby valuable oil is not recovered. Therefore the most
practical solution to oily waste management is to utilize high g-force (~6000 g) to effectively separate oil,
from water and from solids. This allows for the recycling of oil (back to the market source), water (return
to nature) thereby minimizing the waste to be disposed of to the solids portion only. Solids can then be
declassified and g-force recommends this be done by microbial bioremediation as first choice. In effect
the treatment of oily waste as described here sets in place a complete waste treatment program that is
in compliance with environmental standards at the highest level.
Centrifugal separation - the key to successful recovery
Experience has shown that centrifugal separation in a G-force system is the most efficient and cost
effective method for oily waste treatment. This is the result of special design features of the 3-phase
disc stack centrifuge employed and the high g-force it develops. Depending on source and quality, each
oily waste requires its own technical solution. A single centrifuge may suffice or a multi stage system
may be necessary. G-force will tailor make the system that best suits the treatment of your oily waste
based on details specific to your operation.
